Cleaning products (descalers and rust removers) containing nitric acid – request for information

The Chemicals Regulation Directorate (CRD) of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is trying to find out whether there are any cleaning products on the UK market containing 20-30% nitric acid.  These products may be used as descalers and rust removers.

We would like to know whether you are aware of any imports of a cleaning product called ‘Por Çöz’ which may be used as a descaler and rust remover.  The product contains 20-30% nitric acid.

We would also like to know whether there are any other cleaning products on the UK market that contain over 20% of nitric acid.

German regulatory authorities have reported adverse health effects arising from the use of Por Çöz and temporarily prohibited suppliers from placing Por Çöz on the market.  The European Commission has requested information from each member state.

Please direct any enquiries or send details (by 23 December please) to Tracey Ware on 01904 455754.  You can email us at

Germany’s Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) has issued a statement about the health effects of nitric acid-containing cleaning products:
