Local Authority Circular - E.coli O157 Outbreak - August / September 2009

This circular provides information on outbreaks of E.coli O157 reported by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) at open farms (i.e. farms which invite members of the public to visit and which facilitate direct contact with animals) in Surrey and elsewhere during August/September 2009.

It also provides guidance on the action to be taken by HSE Inspectors and Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) in local authorities (LAs) in carrying out the programme of visits to open farms as requested by the HPA.

It’s great to see the Justice Secretary, Jack Straw, flying the flag for a common-sense approach to health and safety (’Safety: some have gone too far’, 8 October).

As the Chair of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), I wholeheartedly agree with Mr Straw when he says that science lessons and experiments are “not about wilfully exposing children to unnecessary danger, but better getting them to understand how to make their own decisions about the risks…”

Duration of Licence - Adventure activities

The duration of a licence is an area where there may be potential for disagreement between the inspector and provider. This Guidance Note is intended to assist inspectors to make an appropriate recommendation as to the duration of a licence. The Adventure Activities Licensing Regulations 2004, regulation 8(d) sets the maximum duration of a licence at 3 years; it can be for a lesser period.

Do your homework on school tie ‘ban’

Britain’s safety watchdog has hit back at claims of a ban on traditional school ties and urged people to do their homework on the subject.

HSE said edicts ordering parents to replace their children’s school ties for clip-on alternatives have no basis in law and ‘elf and safety’ cannot be blamed.
