Review of sickness absence data in the waste and recycling industry

While injury rates have been calculated and reduced in the waste and recycling industry in recent years (HSE Research Report 701), little is known about the prevalence of ill health for this industry. The main objective of this project was to review sickness absence data for the industry and provide estimates of the occupational ill health rate and the annual number of days absent from work.

Warning about equipment safety after worker’s hand damaged

HSE is warning employers to ensure they assess the safety of equipment and ensure that it is sufficiently guarded after an employee’s left hand was severely damaged by the rotating blades of a valve that forms part of the extraction system in a metal recycling process.

The health and safety law poster

As from 6 April 2009, HSE is publishing new versions of its approved health and safety poster and leaflet. To avoid an unnecessary burden on business, HSE has set a five year transition period. The current poster and leaflets must be replaced by the new versions by no later than 5 April 2014.

Managing offensive/hygiene waste

This guidance has been written for managers of waste management operations that may come into contact with offensive/hygiene wastes. It sets out the principles of how to handle ‘offensive/hygiene’ wastes produced by healthcare (medical care) practices or healthcare workers in the community and those produced in the community from non-healthcare (personal care) sources and sets out controls measures that can be taken to reduce the risk of ill health caused by offensive/hygiene wastes found in the municipal waste/recycling stream.

Leading waste management organisations pledge to reduce accidents by 10%
