Pharmaceutical workers exposed to hazardous substance

A Swindon pharmaceutical company has been fined after a number of its employees were sensitised to a potent substance and developed allergic contact dermatitis.

HSE prosecuted Catalent U.K. Swindon Zydis Limited after at least ten employees developed the skin condition when working with Olanzapine. The substance is an active ingredient in one of the most commonly prescribed antipsychotic drugs and is a known cause of allergic contact dermatitis.

Skin cancer caused by pitch and tar

People who work, or have worked, with pitch and tar sometimes get warts. There are several kinds of tar wart, but one of them is cancer and will not go away unless it is treated. It is however, easily cured by prompt treatment.

New hairdressing case study – Tracy

Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH)

Hairdressers wave goodbye to bad hand days

A HSE commissioned trial has revealed that hairdressers say ‘yes’ to reducing their very high chances of getting dermatitis and other uncomfortable skin conditions by wearing non-latex gloves during their work.

Revised guidance for tanning salons and their customers

New advice for businesses in England and Wales about the safe operation of sunbeds has been published today by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

The revised guidance – which was produced in support of the Department of Health’s Cancer Reform Strategy – provides recommendations about how to safely operate ultraviolet tanning equipment, including advice about potential hazards and risk assessments.
