The owners of a Prestwick meat processing plant have been convicted of failing to have a safe isolation procedure in place for machinery, after a worker lost three fingers when a machine he was attempting to repair started up.

HSE today reminded employers of those using all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), (also known as quad bikes) at work of the importance of wearing a protective helmet, the provision of adequate training in the correct use of the vehicle and of ensuring the vehicle is well maintained.

Construction company fined after worker dies in Dundee

A Scottish construction company and one of its directors have been convicted of failing to ensure proper health and safety standards after the death of an employee.

Andrezej Freitag, a 53-year-old from Poland, fell nearly three metres down an exhaust shaft at a block of flats being built on Arbroath Road, Dundee. The incident, on 29 May 2008, happened because there was not a robust barrier on the edge of the shaft.

HSE warns about dangers of working close to overhead power lines

HSE today warned about the dangers of working close to overhead power lines, after a Perthshire soft fruit farming company and its owner were prosecuted following the electrocution of a Polish worker.

Mr Gerard Faltynowski, 26, died on 28 July 2006 after metal extension poles he was using to construct the steel frame of a polytunnel came into contact with an 11,000 volt overhead electricity power line on farm land near Blairgowrie.
