Lanarkshire stoneworkers safety event aims to clear the air

Construction workers in Lanarkshire are being invited to an event this Tuesday (24 November) to find out more about protecting themselves from Silicosis - a potentially lethal lung disease caused by breathing in stone dust.

Failings led to drowning of seven-year-old

HSE said today that serious management failings led to the death of a young boy, who drowned in a swimming pool at a Dundee leisure centre.

The seven year-old, Luke Hutton, died in September 2007 at the Olympia Leisure Complex, Dundee.

Safety Health & Environment Forum

Safer movement of heavy goods - HSE drive to lift standards in Scotland

HSE Inspectors will be carrying out a series of inspections at harbours, marine bases and pipe yard sites throughout the North East and Highlands of Scotland targeting work involving the lifting and movement of heavy goods.

The aim of is to raise awareness, promote sensible management and improve standards at the locations visited in the coming week.

Worker loses arm despite century-old protective law

A court today heard how an Inverurie papermill worker lost his arm despite a century-old piece of legislation designed to protect factory workers.

Aberdeen Sheriff Court today (11 November 2009) fined International Paper (UK) Limited of Inverurie, £6,000 after they pleading guilty to a breach of Section 2 of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.

Edinburgh council fined £14,000 for asbestos failures that put workers at risk

Edinburgh Council has today (11 November) been fined £14,000 after 14 of its employees, were potentially exposed to asbestos while carrying out refurbishment work.

The workers, including joiners, had been instructed to remove laboratory doors from Castlebrae Community High School back in April 2007 and carry out alterations at the council’s workshop on Murrayburn Road.

Fife farmers urged to sign up for safety event

Farmers from across Fife are being encouraged to attend an event that will arm them with the advice they need to make their farms safe places to work and help reduce accidents.

HSE is running a free Agriculture Safety and Health Awareness Day (SHAD) next week (19 November) as a way for those working on farms get practical advice from LANTRA instructors with an industry background.

Asbestos dangers on timetable for trainee tradesmen in Aberdeen

The dangers of asbestos were on the timetable for trainee tradesmen at Aberdeen College this week with a special session led by an expert from HSE.

The visit to Aberdeen was one date in a college tour across Britain as part of HSE’s ‘Asbestos: The hidden killer’ campaign which launched earlier this month.

Hidden killer warning for tradesmen in Scotland

Tradesmen across Scotland are the target of a new national campaign warning them to beware of a hidden killer - asbestos. A total of 2617 of Scottish men died from mesothelioma, a cancer caused by breathing in the deadly fibres.

Safety guidance offered after tractor deaths

Updated, simple, step-by-step guidance on tractor safety is now available for farmers.

Published HSE, it follows a number of recent deaths involving tractors, including a 39-year-old worker who died in East Yorkshire last month while apparently trying to fix a machine with the tractor running and a 46-year-old Scottish man who died in August after his tractor overturned into a ditch.

Cutting accidents in construction - Thurso event aims to reduce risks

Those working in the construction industry are urged to come together and attend a free safety awareness event next week at T3UK, Janetstown Industrial Estate, Thurso.

The event will be held on Tuesday 3 November and it will cover a range of ‘hot topics’ including safe working at height, electricity and isolation, noise and vibration, and mechanical handling and quick hitch.

Grangemouth company fined after worker gets 3,300-volt electric shock

A Grangemouth-based company has been fined for breaching health and safety law after a worker was burned by live power cables. HSE prosecuted refinery and petrochemical company Ineos Manufacturing Scotland Ltd for failing to ensure a safe system of work was in place before undertaking excavation work near live electrical cables.

Explosives firm fined £10,000 after employee loses fingers

An explosives firm has been fined a total of £10,000 after one of its employees was seriously injured in Fife, Scotland. Orica UK Ltd was prosecuted and pleaded guilty to two breaches of health and safety legislation following the accident at the Muirside site.
