The British Safety Council and The Co-operative Group have joined forces to create a new award scheme aimed at reducing injuries in the retail and distribution sector. They are calling for organisations to submit ideas for a piece of equipment or technology that will reduce accidents and save lives in the workplace. Deadline for applications is the 21 March 2011.

Worker died on first day at work

A Newmarket retail display firm has been sentenced after an employee was crushed to death by a stack of glass he was unloading on his first day at work.

Vitalijus Orlovas, 29, an agency worker originally from Lithuania, was unloading sheets of glass from a shipping container at Arken PoP’s site in Hawkesden Road, St Neots when they fell on him. He died at the scene from the crush injuries.

Webtool for shops takes worry out of risk assessment

A quick and easy online tool to help retailers assess the hazards in their shop is available to trial from today (15 December).

HSE has worked to produce the web tool to help implement Lord Young’s recommendation that low-risk workplaces, such as shops, are spared unnecessary paperwork and bureaucracy.

Safety notice – Avoiding trapping/crushing injuries to people in the platform of mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs)

More people die from falls at work than from any other cause. The use of mobile elevating work platforms/powered access equipment has been a major factor in the reduction in falls accidents. For temporary work at height this kind of equipment is often the safest solution.

However there are currently under investigation a number of fatal and serious accidents where operators have become trapped between the guardrails or other equipment on the platform and adjacent obstructions. The purpose of this safety notice is to publicise the issue and direct users to new guidance which addresses this particular aspect of MEWP use.

Safety Alert – Fatality caused by stacked boards collapse

In a recent incident a worker was killed whilst he was helping to remove a board from a stack leaning against a wall. He lost control of the weight of the boards and they fell on him causing serious head injuries. In an earlier almost identical incident at another site a worker had his legs crushed.

Although often large and awkward to handle the retrieval and movement of boards from storage is considered by many users to be a relatively low risk activity. However, boards are heavy and it is easy to lose control of them when they are being moved.

Comet group prosecuted following death of worker in Wrexham

Major electrical retailer Comet Group plc has been fined £75,000 following the death of a contractor who fell through a roof light at its Wrexham store.

Paul Alker, 33, of Brynteg, near Wrexham, was working for a roofing contractor and was on the roof of the Comet store on Mount Street when he stepped on a roof light and fell around 25 feet onto the store floor.

Safety Alert – People in commercial waste containers

Commercial waste bins are emptied around the clock seven days a week, so there are millions of such operations each year.

There have been many anecdotal reports from the industry and in the press of incidents where people have been discovered alive in bins prior to, or during, the contents being tipped into the collection vehicle. Fortunately, in most of these cases, no significant harm has arisen.

Prosecution launched against high street retailer

At Bournemouth Magistrates’ court today HSE initiated criminal proceedings against Marks and Spencer plc and four other companies for asbestos-related breaches during refurbishment work at shops in Reading, Bournemouth and Plymouth.

Employer without compulsory insurance fined

A Cambridgeshire retailer has been fined £1,000 for failing to have compulsory insurance to protect his employees.

The case has prompted HSE to remind all employers about the need for insurance and warn that it will take action against those who fail to protect their staff.
