Two operators were killed in 2007/08 in the UK and HSE is aware of three other fatalities in other countries since 2007.

Current guarding requirements have been effective in controlling the risk of operators suffering crush injuries to their hands and forearms. But as the machines have become larger operators could be putting their lives at risk climbing onto the lower platen.

The 40-year-old employee, who asked not be named was clearing jammed booklets from a stacker machine at Bicester printers, BenhamGoodHeadPrint Limited, when the incident happened.

Basildon Magistrates’ Court heard how the workers at the printers and binders Wyndeham Heron Ltd in Maldon, Essex, had been working with machines, when their hands became trapped.

Flitwick firm Colpac Ltd and two of its directors – Terry Langton, of Huntsmead, Northampton, and Stephen Burton, of Kempston, Bedford – were prosecuted by HSE.
