An international supplier of paper and packaging has been fined after an employee suffered breaks to his arm and ribs in machinery at a Lincolnshire factory.

Worker paralysed after being crushed by reel of paper

An employee of a major paper producer in North Wales has been left paralysed from the chest down after being crushed by a two tonne reel of paper.

Christopher John Shaw, from Wirral, was working as an assistant winder for SCA Hygiene Products UK Ltd when the incident occurred on 29 July 2007.

Occupational Health Benchmarking Tool

By 31 March 2011 all employers in the paper industries will be able to demonstrate that they have implemented policies and management systems for assessing and managing the risks to health of employees to which they are exposed while at work. Every employer shall have a clear system for delivering occupational health. To enable PABIAC to monitor industry progress towards achieving this objective, we would like all employers in the industry to complete the benchmarking questionnaire.

Crane manufacturer fined following near-miss in Sheffield

A crane manufacturer and supplier was today (8 February) fined £10,000 after an electric overhead moving crane dropped a load, narrowly avoiding the crane operator.

Rossendale Group Limited, of Portside North, Merseyton Road, Ellesmere Port in Wirral, pleaded guilty to breaching Section 6(1)(a) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. The company was also ordered to pay £10,000 costs at Sheffield Magistrates Court.

Worker loses arm despite century-old protective law

A court today heard how an Inverurie papermill worker lost his arm despite a century-old piece of legislation designed to protect factory workers.

Aberdeen Sheriff Court today (11 November 2009) fined International Paper (UK) Limited of Inverurie, £6,000 after they pleading guilty to a breach of Section 2 of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.

As from 6 April 2009, HSE is publishing new versions of its approved health and safety poster and leaflet. To avoid an unnecessary burden on business, HSE has set a five year transition period. The current poster and leaflets must be replaced by the new versions by no later than 5 April 2014.
