Worker loses arm despite century-old protective law

A court today heard how an Inverurie papermill worker lost his arm despite a century-old piece of legislation designed to protect factory workers.

Aberdeen Sheriff Court today (11 November 2009) fined International Paper (UK) Limited of Inverurie, £6,000 after they pleading guilty to a breach of Section 2 of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.

Draft paper prepared by ARCA for consideration and discussion at ALG Meeting, 3 November 2009. A Decontamination Unit (DCU) used for asbestos removal works is a potentially contaminated facility, acknowledged by the requirement for it to be air tested prior to removal from a site where it has been used in the decontamination process. Despite strict decontamination procedures, there may be a residual risk such that employees and others need to be warned.

The health and safety law poster

As from 6 April 2009, HSE is publishing new versions of its approved health and safety poster and leaflet. To avoid an unnecessary burden on business, HSE has set a five year transition period. The current poster and leaflets must be replaced by the new versions by no later than 5 April 2014.

Paper industry improves

The Health and Safety Commission’s, Paper and Board Industry Advisory Committee (PABIAC), welcome the evident improvement in health and safety performance in the paper industry. Statistics provided by the Confederation of Paper Industries (CPI) display a downward trend in the workplace accident rate and significant reductions in major injuries.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) today announced the withdrawal of paper industry guidance INDG 396 “Transporting paper safely: Guidance for hauliers and others who transport paper and paper products” after discussions with Department for Transport (DfT).

HSE has withdrawn the paper industry guidance publication INDG 396 “Transporting paper safely: Guidance for hauliers and others who transport paper and paper products” after discussions with Department for Transport (DfT). HSE’s decision to withdraw the gudiance has been discussed at the Health and Safety Commission Paper and Board Advisory Committee and with the Confederation of Paper Industries (CPI). This guidance booklet included advice in relation to securing tall paper reels, bales and palletised products on curtain-sided lorries.
