HSE inspectors, Kent Fire and Rescue Service and local authorities have been looking at areas such as asbestos management, electrical safety, chemical use and equipment maintenance as part of the “Common Approach to Vehicle Enterprise” (CAVE) initiative.

‘Hot work’ includes any process that generates a source of ignition (eg naked flames, heat, sparks) arising from working methods such as welding, flame cutting, grinding and using disc cutters.

The main focus of this work will be to reduce the incidents of ill health from the use of hazardous substances such as isocyanate paints, which are one of the biggest cause of occupational asthma in the UK, with 50 sprayers being diagnosed every year, resulting in a lifetime cost in the range of £94,000 to £138,000.

HSE yesterday prosecuted Azhar (aka Aziz) Mohammed (trading as ANS Bodyshop and AMS Spares) for failing to comply with improvement notices served on 1 May 2009.
