Safer movement of heavy goods - HSE drive to lift standards in Scotland

This guidance informs the assessment of applications for replacement licences for sites licensed under the Nuclear Installations Act 1965 (as amended). It covers the relicensing of nuclear sites which are privately owned and operated and also those which are operated by a civilian contractor on behalf of a government department or agency. This includes sites operated by a Site Licensee Company (SLC) on behalf of the Ministry of Defence or the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.

Inspections aim to improve safety on Sunderland industrial estates

Local authority and HSE inspectors will be working together as they target industrial estates on the issue of health and safety - raising awareness, promoting sensible management and improving standards in those businesses visited. Enforcement will be taken where standards fail to meet legal requirements.

The duration of a licence is an area where there may be potential for disagreement between the inspector and provider. This Guidance Note is intended to assist inspectors to make an appropriate recommendation as to the duration of a licence. The Adventure Activities Licensing Regulations 2004, regulation 8(d) sets the maximum duration of a licence at 3 years; it can be for a lesser period.

This Local Authority Circular (LAC) alerts inspectors to changes to the Control of Major Accident Hazards Regulations 1999, as amended (COMAH) arising from the Chemicals (Hazard Information and Packaging for Supply) (Amendment) Regulations 2008 (CHIP 2008), which have the potential to bring sites storing preparations containing relatively low concentrations of strong biocides (including large retail and wholesale warehouses) within scope of COMAH for the first time.
