Selby company fined after explosion injures worker

A worker at a company providing anti-corrosion solutions to industry was severely injured when a build up of gas vapour in a road tanker exploded a court heard.

The employee, who does not wish to be identified, suffered a fractured skull and severe burns to the legs arms and face when gas vapours from a liquid petroleum gas (LPG) heater, previously placed in the interior of the road tanker, ignited blowing him off his feet.

Calor Gas fined over LPG release

Calor Gas Ltd was today fined £27,500, after a major gas leak led to a cloud of highly flammable Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) forming above its terminal in Essex.

The firm admitted breaching health and safety regulations at the major hazard site when release of up 163 tonnes of LPG leaked into the atmosphere at the Calor Gas terminal on Canvey Island.

LPG bulk installations and pipework topic inspection pack

This topic pack provides guidance for inspectors, HSAOs and local authority enforcement officers on the inspection of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) stored in fixed vessels together with the associated service pipework (up to the emergency control valve). HSE inspectors should make enquiries about the safety of LPG installations as a Matter of Potential Major Concern (see OC 18/12); inspectors and local authority enforcement officers will be carrying out inspections as part of the LPG pipework replacement programme.

Comparing subsurface migration of LPG with natural gas

A programme of experiments assessed differences in behaviour between leaks of natural gas and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) from buried pipes, to inform opinion on whether an existing (Advantica) model of the risks from buried natural gas pipework could be useful in assessing the risks associated with buried metallic LPG pipes.
