New training legislation comes into force from 1 October, this includes revised guidance for employers and revised guidance for first aid training organisations.

Certificate of Approval issued to HSE approved training organisations

Revised guidance for first aid training organisations, incorporating the changes to first aid training, is now available. The changes have required revision of the Certificate of Approval issued to HSE approved training organisations so it covers both first aid at work and emergency first aid at work.

RR708 - Evidence-based review of the current guidance on first aid measures for suspension trauma

In 2002 the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) published a review entitled ‘Harness Suspension: Review and Evaluation of Existing Information’. It was noted in this report that the rescue plan was an essential part of fall protection arrangements. The requirement for this work arose because first aid training organisations and first aiders were not clear about the correct positioning of rescued casualties in the event of a harness suspension situation.

Guidance for first aid training organisations

The revised guidance ‘First-aid training and qualifications for the purposes of the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981: A guide for training organisations’ is now available.

Publication will help first aid training organisations prepare for introduction of the new training regime for first aiders in the workplace. Full implementation will take place from 1 October 2009. Prior to implementation, the current guidance for first aid at work training provider still applies.

Equivalence of First Aid at Work, Offshore First Aid and Offshore Medic Qualifications

First aid issues in the workplace are subject to two separate sets of regulations. First aid in onshore workplaces is subject to the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 (FAW) while first aid offshore is subject to the Offshore Installations and Pipeline Works (First-Aid) Regulations 1989 (OFAR), each with its own ACoP and guidance.
