Pet food company fined after three injured in explosion

A pet food manufacturer has been ordered to pay £29,271 today after three workers were seriously injured by an offal cooker explosion in Cumbria.

HSE has prosecuted Alba Proteins (Penrith) Ltd following the incident at its Wildriggs plant in Penrith. The company was fined the maximum £20,000 and ordered to pay costs of £9,271 at North Cumbria Magistrates’ Court today.

Explosion death prompts £85,000 fine for father and son engineering firm

A father and son engineering company in Devon have been fined at total of £85,000 after pleading guilty to health and safety offences following an explosion that killed an employee.

HSE brought the case after breaches by R J Bateman (Engineering) Limited, of High Street, Midsomer Norton, Bath and by its two directors, father Richard Bateman and son John Bateman.

Provision of active fire protection on offshore installations

This information sheet provides guidance for duty holders on the provision of active fire protection. On an offshore installation, particularly in hydrocarbon processing areas, the most effective fire protection provided for the occupants is, generally, water deluge. Recent new, limited facility designs, have been put forward that do not incorporate active fire protection systems. The lack of such systems is not considered good practice.

Report of explosion at Corus UK Ltd in 2001

This report concerns the events of 8 November 2001 at the premises of Corus UK Ltd, Port Talbot, South Wales. The explosion of one of the company’s blast furnaces led to the tragic deaths of three employees and injury of a number of other people. The explosion caused widespread alarm and concern throughout the locality.

Warning on handling hazardous materials after prosecution

The HSE has told companies, particularly those in the major hazard sector, that they must ensure their workforce follows approved company safety procedures.

The warning comes after BAE Systems Land Systems (Munitions and Ordnance) Ltd was ordered to pay £50,000 in fines and costs of £15,000 at Cardiff Crown Court after a worker was severely burned at its site in Glascoed, Monmouthshire.
