HSE has rebranded and re-launched the explosives website which now targets people with duties under legislation, such as the manufacture and storage of explosives, and classification for transport. It also contains useful guidance for regulators who enforce explosives legislation.

The purpose of this SPC is to inform Inspectors of the publication of a Safety Alert concerning operation of auger feed devices.

There has been a recent serious accident which occurred while an operator was working on a Mobile Explosives Manufacturing Unit (MEMU). The operator sustained serious hand injuries while clearing a blockage in an auger feed device.

A leading global defence company has been fined £80,000 after a worker was killed in an explosion at its Lancashire site.

HSE prosecuted BAE Systems Land Systems (Munitions and Ordnance) Ltd following Lynda Wilkins’ death at the company’s explosives plant on Central Avenue in Chorley.

Sarah Jane Gallagher, Chief Crown Prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service in Sussex after the sentencing of Martin and Nathan Winter at Lewes Crown Court said: “This is a tragic case where two fire crew died in what was described as a mass explosion, while doing their duty putting out a fire that started at the Alpha Fireworks factory in Sussex and spread to surrounding buildings.”

Explosives firm fined £10,000 after employee loses fingers

An explosives firm has been fined a total of £10,000 after one of its employees was seriously injured in Fife, Scotland. Orica UK Ltd was prosecuted and pleaded guilty to two breaches of health and safety legislation following the accident at the Muirside site.
