Ship repair company fined £85,000 after crane platform crush fatality

HSE highlighted the importance of having sufficient information, training and supervision for lifting operations, following a successful prosecution of a Cornwall ship repair company.

This alert comes after A & P Falmouth Limited, C/O A & P Tyne Limited, Tyne & Wear, was charged with Health and Safety breaches following the death of employee (Reginald) John Datson on 8 August 2006.

HSE seeks comments on a proposal to remove the requirement in Regulation 8(2)(f) of the Docks Regulations 1988 for a certificate confirming the safety of a vessel used to transport a person at work in dock operations to or from any working place in docks premises (excluding such vessels as tugs and pilot boats).

Revised memorandum of understanding between HSE, MCA and MAIB

Confined spaces warning after welder electrocuted in ship’s hold

HSE has issued a warning to employers to ensure they plan properly for working in confined spaces after a Norfolk welder was electrocuted when the ship’s hold he was working inside flooded with water.

The health and safety law poster

As from 6 April 2009, HSE is publishing new versions of its approved health and safety poster and leaflet. To avoid an unnecessary burden on business, HSE has set a five year transition period. The current poster and leaflets must be replaced by the new versions by no later than 5 April 2014.

Approved code of practice on confined spaces

On 17 February 2008, HSE published guidance on working in confined spaces.

The revised and updated publication, containing an Approved Code of Practice (ACOP) and guidance on the duties in the Confined Spaces Regulations will offer guidance and reference points to a range of industries and businesses that deal with confined spaces.

Road traffic legislation to roads in docks

This SIM updates and replaces SIM 05/2001/53. There have been a number of serious and fatal accidents recently involving vehicles on roads in and around ports. It is not always clear what legislation applies to such roads, and the relative roles of the HSE and the police in any investigation. This SIM draws attention to the various forms of legislation and guidance on road traffic in docks.

Container top safety frames

Designing health and safety at ports

This Sector Information Minute (SIM) provides guidance for inspectors who may become involved during new developments at ports. The Construction Design and Management Regulations (CDM) require designers to consider the health and safety of construction and maintenance workers and the new CDM Regulations also require them to consider end-user health and safety and compliance with the workplace regulations.

This SIM is published under the Freedom of Information Act.
