What is HSE’s position on receiving applications from doctors interested in becoming an approved medical examiner of divers (AMED)?

From 1 September 2010, HSE is unable to accept applications from doctors interested in becoming an AMED.

Why has this decision been taken?

The decision has been necessary to take account of current resource constraints. It is likely to continue for the foreseeable future but will be subject to periodic review. Any changes to the position will be communicated on HSE’s diving website.

Are there any circumstances under which a new application for approval will be considered after 1 September 2010?

Exceptionally, if special circumstances exist, a new application may be considered by HSE. For example, where an AMED is not readily accessible and this may compromise compliance with relevant legislation.

Where can divers and employers find an AMED?
