The amendments will allow biocidal products containing active substances that were on the market in the EU on 14 May 2000 (and are being supported for review), to remain on the market for a further four years beyond 14 May 2010 (the current cut-off date for such products) while the European Commission completes its ongoing reviews of the active substances in those products.

These include disinfectants, preservatives and pest control agents used to control harmful organisations such as bacteria, fungi and rodents.

HSE has launched a 10-week consultation on the European Commission proposal, which will apply directly in the UK.

  • no dossier was initially submitted by 30th April 2006 and;
  • a new participant came forward but no suitable dossier was subsequently submitted;

cannot be placed on the EU market or subsequently stored for any purpose (except for export and disposal) from 1st June 2010.

The report found that 539 out of 824 samples of 16 different foods tested had no detectable residues. Meanwhile 277 samples contained levels below the maximum residue level (MRL) – the legally permitted level.
