This systematic guide takes duty holders through the process of understanding their duties as defined in Regulation 4 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006.

A set of questions will enable you to identify whether you are a duty holder and take you through a series of steps to help you decide if there is asbestos present and if so, how to manage it.

Free event - Unseen risks in building management

Harrogate Health and Safety Forum sponsored by HSE is to present a free seminar to local businesses to deal with unseen risks in building management. The Pavilions, Great Yorkshire Showground, Harrogate, 10 June.

The event is going to look at three areas of building management:

The duty to manage asbestos;
Legionella within your hot and cold-water system;
Gas safety

‘Baby boom’ carpenters - greatest risk of asbestos related cancer

In the largest global study of its kind - funded by Cancer Research UK and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) - more than 600 patients with mesothelioma and 1,400 healthy people were interviewed to examine UK rates of the disease linked to different occupations.

Construction company fined for unlicensed removal of asbestos

HSE is warning contractors to carry out effective asbestos checks before demolition work starts, and to employ licensed asbestos removal companies.

This warning follows the prosecution of Waite Construction Ltd, of Denham, Uxbridge, who pleaded guilty to Regulation 8(1) of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 and Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.

HSE warns companies to follow correct asbestos handling procedures

HSE has warned firms to properly assess risks when working with asbestos and ensure, if necessary, only licensed contractors are used. The warning comes after a firm from Gorton, Manchester was fined for failing to properly assess whether asbestos was present before starting refurbishment work at a Manchester school.

HSE is warning that firms exposing untrained workers to asbestos would be penalised. This move follows the HSE prosecution of a West Bromwich firm for failing to ensure that adequate information, instruction and training was given to its employees.
