HSE warn of the dangers of working at height after fall

HSE has warned companies that they must control the risks from falls in the workplace. This message follows the prosecution of Spray-Craft Coating Limited after an employee fell more than two meters from the top of a spray booth resulting in several fractures and bleeding to his brain.

Optimising hazard management in offshore oil and gas

Offshore oil and gas duty holders have recognised that a lack of skilled workforce, change to shorter working hours and increase in activity can lead to an erosion of health and safety unless balanced by significant increase in level of training and supervision.

Guidance on inspection of collision risk management system

An offshore installation is exposed to ship collision risk from both in-field and passing vessels. This semi permanent circular provides advice on enforcement in relation to the inspection of a duty holder’s Collision Risk Management System.

Calculating TRIF for normally unattended installations

It has become apparent that some duty holders and/or their QRA consultants have been calculating Temporary refuge impairment frequency (TRIF) for normally unattended installtions on a yearly basis, then factoring the frequency for the level of occupancy of the installation (i.e. number of days/hours the NUI is attended).

This Semi Permanent Circular (SPC) provides guidance for inspectors on the approach to take to determine whether duty holders have addressed the actions required by the Offshore Installations (Safety Case) Regulations 2005 (SI 2005/3117) and the Assessment Principles for Offshore Safety Case Assessment.

The risks posed by exposure to inerting gases in the open air

In 2001 there was a series accident offshore in which employees were overcome by inerting gases while working in the open air. The accident occurred during maintenance work on an inert gas piping system and could potentially have resulted in one or more fatalities, similar incidents have occurred elsewhere. This Information Sheet, which replaces Safety Notice 3/2002, provides guidance on the risks associated with inerting gas, even in open and apparently well ventilated spaces.

Fall shatters life of Rhondda carpenter

A five-metre fall left Rhondda carpenter David Morgan with serious injuries which may well have ended his career. Following the prosecution of his employers for the incident, HSE is warning companies to ensure they have safe systems in place for working at height.
