Acoustic leak detection (ALD) is being used increasingly in the offshore industry to detect leaks of flammable substances on offshore platforms. Rather than rely solely on human intervention or the uncertain and inefficient dispersion of gas to detectors, ALD detects leaks through the ultrasonic sound produced by the escaping gas jet.
This report recognises the benefits of using such devices possibly in conjunction with line-of-sight sensors to detect gaseous releases.
